BURTON MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY FOLLOWING K-9 MEMORIAL INCIDENT

A Burton man has been arrested after disrupting a memorial service for a police dog.
62-year-old Stanley Powell of Burton was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, after striking a reserve deputy at the memorial service at Burton City Hall on July 5. The service honored retired K-9 Unit Tux, who served Burton Police for more than seven years.
During the service, Powell drove into the parking lot and tried to pull into a handicap space, hitting the leg of the Washington County reserve deputy. The deputy confronted Powell, who attempted to flee the scene and struck the man again, this time in the shoulder.
DPS troops were called to Burton City Hall, where they would take statements from witnesses. The District Attorney’s Office would file charges and issue a warrant for Powell’s arrest.
Washington County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jay Petrash says Powell was arrested at his home in Burton last week without incident. He would later be released on $50,000 bond.
