DPS RELEASES STATEMENT ON POTENTIAL OFFICE CLOSURES

The Texas Department of Public Safety has issued a statement on the potential closure of driver’s license offices across Texas.

DPS states the department is not implementing any plans to close low-demand driver’s license offices, and its plans were to only identify potential offices to close.  DPS says it will not take any action on a recommendation without direction from state leaders or legislature.

DPS submitted its proposal to the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission for review, which was rejected last week in a unanimous vote.  The proposal identified 87 offices across the state as inefficient, and suggested closing the offices to save on operation costs.

Many of the offices cited in the recommendation are the only ones in their region, located in rural areas.  The Giddings and Caldwell offices would have been affected by the closures.

DPS says, as demand for driver’s license services grows across the state, the department will continue to work with the legislature in order to acquire needed resources and provide customer services.
