Washington County Clerk Beth Rothermel was recognized at today’s (Tuesday) commissioners meeting, for her work creating a guide to county government.

The Texas Association of Counties (TAC) presented a 2018 County Best Practices Award to Rothermel, for her Guide to Your County Government booklet.  Washington County was one of just eight counties in Texas to receive the award this year, with over 50 applicants.

Rothermel headed the project to create this booklet, which not only looks back on the history of Washington County, but helps readers understand functions of local government.  Her work on the booklet started after people began requesting lists of current and former elected county officials.

Rothermel says the project began simply, but it branched out into something greater.  She turned the project into a comprehensive resource guide on local government.

County Judge John Brieden praised Rothermel for her work, saying she “spent years on this project,” and that this was “not something that just fell into place.”

The booklet has brief descriptions on each office, contact information of elected officials, and even tax data and historical data going back as far as 1867.

The Best Practices Award, given out every two years, recognizes county leaders that find solutions to challenges facing local governments.  The program focuses on management, safety, technology, health and human services, and other community improvements.
