BLUEBONNET ELECTRIC ADDRESSES REPORTED INCREASE IN ATTEMPTED PHONE SCAMS
Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative members have reported a recent increase in attempted phone scams.
The fraudulent callers claim to be Bluebonnet contractors, telling members their power will be disconnected within an hour unless they make a payment over the phone.
Bluebonnet General Manager Matt Bentke assures these calls are not being made by Bluebonnet. He says the company will not threaten to immediately disconnect power to members unless they make payment over the phone.
Bluebonnet makes at least two attempts to remind its members with accounts that have not paid – once by mail and again by a courtesy phone call – within ten days after their payment’s due date.
If a Bluebonnet member has not gotten a reminder in the mail or a courtesy call about their account, and someone claiming to be from Bluebonnet calls for immediate payment by phone, they are urged to not pay.
Members who get a call from someone asking for account information or a payment should not give the caller any information.
If you receive a call like this, Bluebonnet recommends that you get as much information about the caller as possible, including their phone number. After that, report the attempted scam by calling Bluebonnet at 800-842-7708, along with local law enforcement.
Bluebonnet members can check their account status through the co-op’s website, www.bluebonnetelectric.coop, or mobile app.
