CITY OF BRENHAM BEGINNING DOWNTOWN DRAINAGE AND SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS
The City of Brenham has begun improvement projects on old infrastructure related to drainage and accessible streetscape amenities.
The improvements consist of inlets, increasing drainage under the railroad right-of-way, and placing drainage structures underground rather than allowing storm water to flow all the way down Park Street.
The project will also add sidewalks, lighting, and landscaping along Park Street. City staff believe this will spur development that has been waiting for these improvements to occur.
These improvements will be funded with 2017 Certificates of Obligation at $302,000, with an additional $150,000 coming from the Brenham Community Development Corporation, dedicated towards the streetscape improvements portion. The total amount allocated was $452,000, which also covered $71,280 in engineering costs.
Back in March, the city council awarded the downtown drainage and sidewalk project to M&C Fonseca Construction Company Inc. from Granite Shoals. Their base bid of $368,776 for the project was accepted. The alternate bid consisting of additional sidewalk and handicap ramps near the Park Street and 2nd Street intersection was not accepted, in order to stay in budget.
Public Works Director Dane Rau is expecting the project to take six months or less to complete.
