ANOTHER SKIMMER FOUND AT BRENHAM GAS STATION

Authorities have come across another credit card skimmer at a gas station in Brenham.

According to the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Facebook page, a skimmer was found by inspectors on pump #1 at the Valero Corner Store at 1708 Highway 105. Inspectors were called out after receiving a complaint at the location.

Local law enforcement was notified for follow-up and removal of the device.

Just last week, inspectors and Washington County authorities warned that a skimmer had been found right across the street at the Rattlers Exxon at 1703 Highway 105.

The Texas Department of Agriculture provides the following tips to avoid being skimmed:

  • Use the pump closest to the storefront, in line of sight for store personnel.
  • Before pumping, check for unusual Bluetooth signals with an ID or string of numbers and letters; those might signal a skimmer.
  • Check that security tape on the pump cabinet has not been damaged. Torn tape might indicate a cabinet was opened without store personnel knowing.
  • The safest bet is to pay inside the store with cash.
  • Keep an eye on your bank statements, and always keep the receipt after filling up.
  •  If you think you've been skimmed, call 1-800-TELL-TDA, and an inspector will be sent to check it out.

  1. I purchased gas at the Valero on 105 today and all the pumps did not have security tape on the pumps. When I went inside and asked why, I was told that a State inspector removed all the tape to check all the pumps – this is totally stupid as we are told to check the security tape and not use a pump with out it. I will never use this location again and feel they really don’t care about security!

  2. I purchase gasoline at one of these stations and my credit card number was used at a gas station in southeast Houston now I have to go through all the trouble of getting a new credit card Don’t these stores have cameras that can identify the people that used my card. This is the third time that this has happened to me seems like these stores need to add more cameras at least one per pump

  3. There needs to be a better locking system/device for things like that. Vending machines, gas pumps, arcade type games, storage building units, etc all use the same type key (the design limits variations) and those locks have been used for 30+ years. Imagine how many people over the years have or had employment in those fields and the access to keys that go with it….

  4. I believe this is the 3rd skimmer you (KWHI) have reported at this one specific station (105 & 577). I like stopping there, but I guess no more. I’ll find another station until that owner gets a handle on all the skimmers at that location.

    Wow.

  5. Sorry for two comments, but this skimming equipment must be manufactured and sold by someone, why are authorities not going after the source of equipment to insure it is not on the open market for any common thief to purchase and use?

  6. I have to wander when the gas station become liable for this type of fraud and the harm it causes for their failure to properly secure their pumps and credit card readers. There should be daily inspections of their equipment to protect their customers who depend upon these businesses to provide a safe and secure means of purchasing their products.

    1. I completely agree. One time I could understand. That said, once one is found within a city, all gas station owners need to take precautions. Now three have been found in the same area. I echo the same sentiment; when does the gas station owner become liable? Enough is enough already.

  7. Just curious… Why dont the owners of these locations either inspect or train their managers to inspect their pumps as part of a daily check. I am pretty sure if they have or would put a piece of security tape on the key or lid it would not take much to identify if someone had accessed the inside of the pump control. If the skimmer is at the card slot, that should be obvious to someone trained to look for it. How this happened more than once amazes me.
