BURTON SCHOOL BOARD TO CONSIDER TAX RATE, MEETING DATE FOR BUDGET DISCUSSION

The Burton School Board will hold a special meeting Monday to discuss the proposed tax rate.

The board will consider setting the proposed tax rate to be published, along with a public meeting date to discuss the budget and tax rate.

Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy said the board will present the projected tax rate figures at Monday’s board meeting for discussion.  The budget will be addressed at the board’s regular meeting on August 19th.

Last year, the board kept the tax rate at $1.17 per $100 valuation.  That included $1.04 for maintenance and operations, and 13 cents for debt services.  The rate has remained the same since 2011, when it went up one cent from the previous year’s rate.

The budget last year had a deficit of just under $214,000, but the difference was covered via fund balance.  At the time the budget passed last year, Dr. Kennedy said the district was also expecting to receive a raise in funds from the Texas Education Agency based on student enrollment.

Last year’s budget was passed on a 3-2-1 vote, after lengthy discussion concerning pay raises for district employees.

Also in session, the board will consider approval of the teacher appraisal calendar and the 2019-20 compensation plan.

The board will meet Monday evening at 5:30 p.m., in the Burton ISD Administration Office.
