BRENHAM LIBRARY TO HOST BLACK HISTORY PROGRAMS
A celebration of Black History Month is set for next week at the Brenham library.
Shenole Latimer will play live music, tell stories, hold group participation and provide humorous demonstrations at the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library, next Tuesday (2/25) at 4:00.
Latimer’s program “All That Jazz” leads the audience through a highly interactive and entertaining presentation, designed to introduce the youngsters to the colorful and expressive world of Jazz music.
The program is designed for children ages 4-to-10, but all ages are welcome.
Then, at 5:30 p.m. on the 25th, Dr. Andrea Roberts will present a program on the Texas Freedom Colony Project.
The Freedom Colonies—also known as Freedmen’s Towns, were black settlements, or ‘the Black side of town’.
Former slaves founded these Texas colonies between 1866-and-1920. Currently seven Freedom Colonies have been mapped in Washington County.
Dr. Roberts will be informing those in attendance about the project and seek assistance in her goal of collecting stories from local descendants of the Freedom Colonies.
