AMNESTY PERIOD OVER FOR GREAT TEXAS WARRANT ROUNDUP
The amnesty period has ended for the Great Texas Warrant Roundup.
Starting today (Saturday), agencies such as the Brenham Municipal Court and Washington County Sheriff’s Office will step up efforts to serve outstanding warrants. Law enforcement warns that arrests can occur at any location, including the defendant’s home, school, or workplace.
Brenham City Marshal Mark Pierce said over the course of the amnesty period, the city cleared approximately 63 warrants and 54 violators. He added that, although the amnesty period may be over, people with warrants are still encouraged to come in before the court and resolve their cases voluntarily, before they are bound to do so by arrest.
Under state law, those that come before a court and make a good faith effort to take care of their outstanding Class C warrants are afforded safe harbor, and are not subject to arrest. Additionally, if a judgment is rendered against someone unable to pay it, that person can ask a judge to consider their ability to pay and offer other means to satisfy the judgment.
