BURTON ISD MOVING TO WEEKLY FOOD DISTRIBUTION

Burton ISD is modifying its drive-thru meal services.

The Burton School Board met via Zoom Wednesday afternoon to announce the district would be modifying its meal service plan for students starting next week.

Starting next week, the district will hold weekly meal distributions and instructional packet pick-ups and drop-offs, shifting from the previous daily meal distribution.  Meals and instructional packets will be available from Mondays from noon to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Burton ISD cafeteria.  Similar to Brenham ISD, Burton ISD will now distribute packages with enough shelf-stable food for one school week.

Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy made the announcement during her report at Wednesday’s meeting of the Burton School Board, saying it is “very risky” to continuously bring anyone in and out of any place and that it remains important to maintain social distancing.  Dr. Kennedy said food will be provided with instructions for each day of the week.  The district will provide more information to families on the modified meal services today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday).

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, Dr. Kennedy said the district is considering several options for senior graduations next month.  She said the district knows that school closures may end up lasting longer than just through May 4th, but right now it is sticking with what is on its schedule.

Dr. Kennedy also mentioned the Region 6 Service Center has provided Internet “hot spots” to the district to give to students who do not have access to Internet.  She said the district may look at getting more “hot spots” through AT&T or Verizon.

During regular session, trustees accepted a donation of $125,000 from the estate of Donald Derrick to set up for a scholarship fund for seniors.  Dr. Kennedy said a committee will be put together to determine how to best distribute the money, noting that more funds are expected in the future.

The board also approved a resolution regarding the determination of class rank and GPA for graduating seniors.  For this school year, the class ranking will be determined by the fourth six weeks grading, rather than the fifth six weeks.

Board members also accepted the resignation of Student Services Director James Little, who is taking the position of principal at Somerville Elementary School.  Burton ISD will post a position for K-12 Assistant Principal in place of the Student Services Director position.

The board also:

  • Approved a statement of impact form from charter school International Leadership of Texas.
  • Approved an educator appraisal waiver form.
  • Approved the Texas Association of School Board’s Risk Management Fund’s new Comprehensive Coverage Program proposal for 2020-21.
  • Renewed an annual contract with Lightspeed as the provider of the district’s Internet content filter.
  • Approved instructional materials allotment and Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) certification for 2020-21.
  • Extended the contract of Special Services Cooperative Director Kristi Hess for 2020-21.
  • Approved the contracts of Holly Horton and Michelle Dietrich for the Burton Special Services Cooperative.
  • Approved several teacher contracts.
  • Approved budget amendments for 2019-20.

  1. I hope that Burton ISD and Region 6 ESC will consider providing teachers /staff “hot spots” for those of us who don’t have internet connections at home. Having to sit at Walmart, Starbucks or the public library parking lots in Brenham to use their free WiFi is not always convenient. But we do it to be able to provide on line assistance to our precious students that we miss so much.
