NEARLY 24,000 REGISTERED VOTERS IN WASHINGTON CO.

Washington County has its highest number of registered voters in the last 30 years ahead of November’s general election.

Monday was the final day to register to vote for the election, and according to County Clerk Beth Rothermel, the county had 23,993 registered voters as of the deadline.

Rothermel said the county will continue to get registrations that voters sent to the state rather than the county, so the county will push past 24,000 registered voters in the coming days and weeks.

By comparison, the county had 23,173 registered voters for 2018’s November election, and 22,437 for 2016’s election.  Rothermel said she could not find any notation of registered voter numbers for elections before 1984, so it would be speculation to guess how many registered voters there were in elections before then.

Mail-in ballots are also at record numbers this year, with the county having mailed out over 1,700 and received over 500 back so far.  Voters have until October 23rd to apply for a ballot by mail.

Voters can return mail-in ballots by mail or by bringing them to the county clerk’s office.  Rothermel said voters returning their ballots in person must bring them inside the courthouse to the county clerk’s office, as there is no drop box outside the courthouse.  Voters will be asked to show their ID.  Rothermel noted that all of this is according to state law in place for this election.

Early voting begins Tuesday at the Washington County Courthouse Annex.  Dates for early voting are October 13-16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., October 17th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., October 18th from 12 to 3 p.m., October 19-23 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., October 24th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., October 25th from 12 to 3 p.m., and October 26-30 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Election Day is November 3rd, which will have polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
