BOCCE COURT UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT JACKSON STREET PARK

Fans of bocce will soon have a place to play in Brenham.
A bocce court is currently being built at Jackson Street Park, after converting an old volleyball court beside the newly built pickleball courts. The new bocce court, measuring 10 feet by 60 feet, is expected to be complete and ready for the public by the end of the day tomorrow (Friday).
Public Works Director Dane Rau said the city began the process of creating a bocce court about a year and a half ago, not long after the completion of the pickleball courts. He believes the bocce court will offer players a passive alternative to the more physically active game of pickleball.
A game of bocce begins with one of the two players or teams throwing a small ball, called a “jack” or “pallino,” from one end of the court into a zone at the opposite end. Teams then toss or roll their bocce balls toward the pallino. The object is to get as many of the bocce balls as possible closer to the target ball than the opposing player or team.
About $1,000 of the project’s $1,500 cost came from grant funding through the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA), with the remaining $500 coming from the city’s operating budget.
Rau said if the court is received well, there is room at the site for expansion.
While the city is providing the space to play and will soon provide a scoreboard, players will need to bring their own equipment.
