CITY OF BRENHAM ASKS CUSTOMERS TO REDUCE WATER USE

The City of Brenham is asking its customers to voluntarily reduce their water consumption.

Earlier this month, the Brazos River Authority (BRA) announced that a Stage 1 drought watch has been implemented for Lake Somerville, where the city obtains its water supply, due to drier-than-normal conditions in the lower Brazos River Basin.  The drought watch entails a voluntary 5 percent reduction of the water use that would have occurred in the absence of any drought contingency measures.

Assistant City Manager of Public Services and Utilities Donald Reese says the level of concern right now is relatively minimal, but the threat of a drought still persists.

While the drought contingency plans of the BRA and the city are separate, the city is asked as part of its water lease agreement with the BRA to help conserve water whenever the BRA enters various stages of its plan.

Reese says there are several ways for residents to reduce water consumption, including turning water off while brushing their teeth and making sure washing machines and dishwashers are running on full loads.  On the outside of the home, he recommends planting drought-resistant plants and using drip irrigation systems rather than spray irrigation.  He also says residents should consider running their irrigation systems at night.

  1. Why are we building many more subdivisions when we know this problem is only going to get worse. Brenham needs wise leadership and decisions that improve instead hurt our citizens. We understand growth but we also understand being practical.
No one is happy about closing off the lake to the public either. Get the problem solved so Somerville and Brenham residents can enjoy their LAKE. And make the city council meetings where working people can attend. 5:30 is fine with us.

  2. Wow this idiot running the city….. This then the firings at the Fire Department today….. Os his contract up yet???

  3. Also ask Sugerland to reduce their use also, and Dow and all the other users too. Shameful.
