SEVERAL CONTESTED RACES IN AREA CITY, SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS

In addition to the contested city council and school board races in Brenham and Burton, there are several races of note in area cities.

Contested city and school board elections make up the ballot in cities like Bellville, Caldwell, Giddings, La Grange, Navasota, Sealy, and Somerville.

In Bellville, the city council and school board each have one contested race.  For Alderman Position 4 on the council, incumbent Clay Kistler is challenged by Paul Looney.  Meanwhile, school board incumbent Grant Lischka will look to defend his Position 4 seat against Nahida Saker.

The Caldwell City Council has six candidates vying for three alderman seats.  Those candidates include incumbents Kavon Novak, Nancy Stewart, and Allan Willis, along with challengers Jessie Enrique, Jr., Cameron McCuller, and Dr. Shirley Smith.

Four candidates are seeking election to three seats on the Giddings City Council.  While incumbent Jake Horne is not running for another term, fellow incumbents Alan Casey and Frank Castro are seeking re-election.  Those two are being challenged by Jacob Janda and Gina Reat.

In La Grange, Jan Dockery, Sarah Mabry, and Paul “Tex” Parker are running for the seat of long-time Mayor Janet Moerbe, who is not running for re-election after serving in the position for 20 years.  There is also a contested race for the Ward 1 council seat currently held by Ken Taylor, who is not seeking re-election.  Katie Gross and Sandra Hooper have filed for the position.  In addition, the La Grange School Board has four candidates for the Position 6 seat on the board.  Incumbent Dr. Kari Brawley is challenged by Emily Gonzalez, Calvin Mersiovsky, and Cindi Virnau.

One contested city council race is on the ballot for voters in Navasota, as they will choose between incumbent Grant Holt and Eustacio Ostigin for Place 5 on the council.

Sealy voters will have a say in three city council races and two school board races.  On the city council, Charles Lee Wiley will challenge Chris Noack for his seat for Place 2.  The respective incumbents for Place 4 and 5, Jennifer Sullivan and Larry Koy, are not seeking re-election.  Yvonne Johnson and Roxanna Saldana have filed for election to the Place 4 seat, while Sandra Lee and Edward Zapalac are running for the Place 5 seat.  Meanwhile, the school board has contested races for Positions 6 and 7.  Ralph Bond, Bradley Miller, and John Sodolak have filed for election to the Place 6 seat currently held by Creed Roberts.  Place 7 incumbent Joe Mike Young will look to defend his seat against Claribel Barrera and Tyjuana Clinton.

The position of mayor, two alderman seats and three school board positions are on the ballot in Somerville.  Former Somerville mayor Tommy Thompson and current Mayor Pro-Tem Delfino Orozco are running for the seat of Micheal Bradford, who is not running for re-election.  Six candidates are running for two alderman seats, those being the seats of Orozco and Debra Kaye Coleman.  Coleman is running for re-election, while Fred Elliott, Carol Freeman, Erik Kline, Kay Cooper Moravec, and Lucinda Murphy are also seeking election.  On the school board, four candidates are vying for three seats.  Incumbents Bryan Crook, Joe Gonzales, and Melissa Tharp have filed, along with David Idlebird.

In south Brazos County, voters will decide on a proposition for the Brazos County Emergency Services District (ESD) #1.  The proposal is for the adoption of a local sales and use tax in the district at a rate no more than 1.5 percent.  The proposal is to help the ESD hire paid firefighters.

Election Day is tomorrow (Saturday).  KWHI will have live coverage of election results as they come in tomorrow, beginning at 7 p.m. on KWHI AM 1280, FM 101.7, and kwhi.com.

  1. Wow. That says it all. What a shame.
We’ve been looking for info on the candidates. I wish they would be interested in sharing information.

  2. Burton School board election?
Not much has been posted about the Burton race. I think 4 running for two spots.
I wish there would have been a forum with the Burton candidates. Seems lots of voters aren’t interested. I am interested.

Thank you for keeping us posted.

    1. KWHI was approached about doing a forum for the Burton School Board race. We offered to do a forum or at the least, interview each of the candidates. None of the 3 candidates were interested in doing either. Two specifically declined the offer of a Forum.
