BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO DISCUSS WARD REDISTRICTING

The Brenham City Council will discuss the possible redistricting of the city’s four wards at its meeting Thursday, which has a new start time of 3:30 p.m.

Councilmembers will review an engagement agreement between the city and Bickerstaff Heath Delgado Acosta, LLP related to redistricting services for the city.

According to City Secretary Jeana Bellinger, there can be no more than a 10 percent deviation in population between the least and most populated wards, so as the city’s population grows, it may trigger the need to adjust the boundary lines of the city’s wards.

According to the agenda packet, the redistricting process begins with the receipt of census data from the federal government, and will involve public hearings and work sessions.  The city expects to receive state population data from the Census Bureau by August 16th.  The final redistricting plan will be approved by the city council by ordinance.

Also at Thursday’s meeting, the council will:

  • Recognize three police department promotions to corporal: Andrea Guerra, Alex Saenz and Zackary Greig.
  • Proclaim the 75th anniversary of James F. Dillon VFW Post 7104.
  • Act upon a $20,000 donation from the Fortnightly Club for the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library. The money was raised through fundraising efforts that included book sales and donations from the community.
  • Consider resolutions authorizing the acceptance of infrastructure improvements in Phase 1 of the Liberty Village subdivision and Phase 4 of the Overlook Estates subdivision.
  • Act upon a resolution formally amending the commencement time for regular city council meetings.
  • Consider a noise variance request from RSR Entertainment for a Juneteenth Block Parky to be held June 19th at Mundy’s Hideout at 1609 East Alamo Street.

The council will meet Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Brenham City Hall.
