Members of the Brenham Planning and Zoning Commission and Main Street Board will meet Monday to consider approval of the proposed Historic Preservation Ordinance.

The joint meeting will cover the background of why the ordinance was developed, as well as the contents of the ordinance.

In 2019, the City of Brenham heard feedback during its comprehensive planning process concerning the preservation of the city’s historic downtown district, along with historic homes and landmarks.

According to the agenda packet, the ordinance seeks to “preserve the authenticity” of downtown Brenham and “protect the heavy public investment made in the past 20-plus years.”

If the proposed ordinance is adopted, a Downtown Overlay District, covering 49.4 acres, would be created.  Additional historic districts and local landmarks may be designated upon request by property owners and upon review by a Historic Preservation Board.  The board would be made up of seven people appointed by the Brenham City Council; at least four members must be property owners within the historic district or an owner of a historic landmark.

If approved, the ordinance will be presented to the Brenham City Council for potential adoption at a future meeting.

The meeting will be held Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at The Barnhill Center.

  1. What’s the point? The state will just respond to some moneyed developer and override any city ordinances. Texas Cities and counties have zero autonomy when it comes to ordinances. The no metal exterior house ordinance was shot down by the state 6 weeks after it was created by Brenhams council.
