An Army veteran has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of driving his vehicle into a group of bicyclists, killing two of them, in Waller County.

Victor Kevin Tome was sentenced last week, charged with Capital Murder, two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Accident Involving Serious Bodily Injury and Two Counts of Accident Involving Death.

The charges are from an incident on March 25, 2017, where prosecutors say Tome purposely drove into a group of cyclists in a bike race on Buller Road, north of Brookshire.  According to the Waller County District Attorney’s Office, Tome struck five people and killed Keri Guillory and Craig Tippit.

Investigators said Tome fled the scene and broke into a house, where he hid until he was arrested later that day.

Tome pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.  A military psychiatrist testified during the trial that Tome suffered from psychosis due to extensive abuse of ecstasy, marijuana and alcohol.

The jury took a little over an hour to convict Tome of all counts.  On the charge of Capital Murder, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
