NAACP FILES SUIT OVER ‘EYES OF TEXAS’

The Texas chapter of the NAACP and a group of University of Texas students have filed a federal civil rights complaint against the university for its continued use of school song “The Eyes of Texas”.

The complaint, filed with the U.S. Department of Education, alleges that black students, athletes, band members, faculty and alumni are being subjected to violations of the Civil Rights Act and a hostile campus environment over the use of the song.

The NAACP and the students want the federal government to withhold funding from the university.

Gary Bledsoe, president of the Texas NAACP and a Texas law school graduate, sharply criticized the university on Wednesday for requiring the Longhorn Band to play the song at athletic events, and expecting athletes to stand and sing it after games.

First-year football head coach Steve Sarkisian has said the team will sing the song.

Last year, a group of athletes and students called for the school to drop the song amid racial injustice protests.

  1. Of all of the schools one could accuse of racism, UT is near the very bottom of the list. What a joke.

  2. The NAACP is a racist group that cares nothing about improving lives. They simply want to throw out accusations to continue divide people. That song or statues around the country are not the problem. The culture that continues to disregard faith, turn from God, promote fatherless births, non responsibility and all things that make people good caring responsible is the problem. 1000’s and 1000’s of blacks have gone through that school and went on to be great citizens. And they did not because they are black, not because they aren’t white…they did because they went to school, worked hard, got past all the obstacles and earned their degree. Efforts like banning a song will have no benefit.

    1. Like you said, ‘these’ Blacks went to school, worked hard and earned their degree. The school song had NOTHING to do with their success. Removing the song will not diminish, deny nor denigrate ANYONE’S ability to earn a degree. What exactly does the song contribute to one’s ability to earn a degree? Doors (statutes, songs, taboos) come down. Some after one knock and others after several knocks by succeeding generations; but, they come down. Each generation has the right to decide what is acceptable and what has to change. This generation is more noble than, perhaps, the one you were born and raised in.
See it as progress toward racial Utopia!

      1. The University of Texas is the most integrated system around.

It had a SCOTUS case because of affirms action, which discriminated against a white female, who was denied on because they needed to fill a minority quota.

        The LYRICS are NOT racist:

        “Texas fight, Texas fight
        And it’s goodbye to A&M.
        Texas Fight, Texas Fight,
And we’ll put over one more win.
        Texas Fight, Texas Fight,
For it’s Texas that we love best.
Hail, Hail, The gang’s all here,
And it’s good-bye to all the rest! (YELL)
        Yea Orange! Yea White!
        Yea Longhorns! Fight! Fight! Fight!
        Texas Fight! Texas Fight,
        Yea Texas Fight!
        Texas Fight! Texas Fight,
        Yea Texas Fight!

“The Eyes of Texas are upon you,
        All the livelong day.
The Eyes of Texas are upon you,
        You cannot get away.
        Texas Fight, Texas Fight,
For it’s Texas that we love best.
Hail, Hail, The gang’s all here,
And it good-bye to all the rest!”

        ••••••••

I’ve read it’s the time, which can be fixed.

But the REALITY is it’s a bunch of folks complaining to get some sort of benefit or being told to be offended.

Just like statues: NO ONE I’ve seen has been bothered by statues, but there are folks who say they’re offensive.

NO ONE is making a person look at a statue.

NO ONE is making a person attend a school that offends them.

And – no, not a UT grad and don’t care for the school because it’s CLEARLY biased (it’s the only school I got a rejection letter, and I too got the “quota” reason – I applied out if courtesy).

But I call out this girl what it is: woke nonsense.

      2. And to clarify: I refer to the TUNE.

And to prove a point on statues, the 10 commandments monument on the Capitol grounds is nearly impossible to find, but folks try to remove it too.

I was asked 20 times by different folk where it was because they wanted to see it… and I don’t live there.

      3. Please, calm down. It is clear that this song, as short and lame as it is, really affects you.
If you don’t like the song, don’t listen to it.
As per your incorrect comments previously, America has never been blonde hair and blue eyes, that was Germany’s WWII stancIf you take a little time out of your busy schedule, try and read about who founded America, and who came over to populate it. Many people, from many nations have come here for a better life. It is a melting pot, always has been, always will be. Read up on these things a little more, before you speak nonsense. It actually sounds very racist. Be kind. You will live longer.

  3. The song is not racist. Anyone who claims it is, is grasping at straws. The left don’t actually care about racism or any other supposed “injustice” they are fighting against. They simply want to tear down every single tradition that the people in this country hold dear. Their fight to associate everything with oppression and racism will never stop. It is a Marxist ideology that seeks to overthrow everything that Americans hold sacred until they have full control. That is their end-game. It is not about the petty things they claim to care about. They destroy one tradition and they will immediately look for the next one.

    1. I think you are off base with the assumptions you are making. Many left people don’t even care for the NAACP or what little law suits they file. Don’t associate them as one in the same.

    2. In your opinion. Perhaps your confusion stems from the definition of what constitutes the values and attributes of what is designated “American”. Those values have changed! Certainly, it is not blonde hair and blue eyes … any longer. Many cultures, many ethnicities and language groups make up the American nation and the mix is changing quickly over time. And since you seem to be a little behind the curve; both the left and right across cultural lines, march and protest together to change the mores & taboos of our doomed society.

      1. Who brought “blonde hair and blue eyes” into this? Certainly not I. I have neither one and I’m pretty sure the song in question doesn’t mention them either. Our country was designed to be a melting pot where we share many common elements of a similar culture. It was not designed to be many separate tribes with each doing their own thing and staying separate from everyone else. It is a culture that has created freedom and opportunity to ALL Americans. ANYONE in this country can accomplish ANYTHING they set out to do. That is the great thing about America and why we celebrate our many traditions. Marxists hate our success and want to tear down every tradition in order to establish their own idea of “equity.” History proves that their verison of “equity” is equal poverty for all except the ruling class.

      2. Those values that you speak of are written into the constitution and will not change. Life, liberty the pursuit of happiness (written originally as property) are what you will believe or you best not live here. Followed to its logical conclusion, “race is a social construct”, makes race and ideas of cultural diversity irrelevant. Your writing appears racist. A healthy human form is beautiful and obviously the most advanced creation on the planet. If that form has (relative to the size of human pop ) “blonde hair and blue eyes”, it will always be a source of wonder. We are not doomed, but personally, you most definitely can be.

  4. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE TEXAS. THEN LEAVE NOW. I AM FED UP WITH YALL. LEAVE AS FAST AS YOU CAN. CRYING LIKE LITTLE BABYS. GO FIND SOMETHING TO SUCK ON.

  5. If you don’t like the song just don’t go to that school. All universities have a song. Come on people.
