Former Sealy Tiger and SMU Mustang Eric Dickerson has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. On Tuesday, Dickerson and 27 other college football greats were invited to Las Vegas for the induction ceremony. Dickerson was voted into the 2020 class, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic no ceremony was held. In Dickerson's senior year at Sealy High School he ran for 2,667 yards and helped lead Sealy to a 15-0 record and the 1978 state championship. In that game he ran for a then state championship record 296 yards, adding 4 touchdowns in the victory. He also won two state track championships in 1977.
Dickerson then played his college football at SMU as part of the vaunted "Pony Express" where he rushed 790 times for 4,450 yards and 47 touchdowns. Those totals broke Earl Campbell's SWC record for attempts and yards, and tying Doak Walkers school record for touchdowns (48 total). He would garner many All-Conference and All-American honors, becoming a Heisman Finalist his senior season (finishing 3rd).
Dickerson would be drafted by the L.A. Rams #2 overall in the 1983 NFL Draft. He would continue to break records in the NFL, setting rookie records for rushes, yards, and touchdowns. As well a record that still stands to this day, setting the single season rushing record with 2,105 yards in 1984, breaking O. J. Simpsons record.
