BRENHAM CUBS 5 COLLEGE STATION COUGARS 1

After a rough night on Friday, the Brenham Cub Baseball Team bounced back with 5-1 victory over the College Station Cougars on Saturday afternoon to punch their ticket to the Region Semifinals with a 2-1 series victory.

College Station got on the board first. Mike Elko led off the bottom of the first inning with a single off Brenham starting pitcher Lane Sparks. After a questionable balk call, Elko moved to second, and then was bunted to third by Rylan Deming. Blake Binderup followed with a sacrifice fly, and that scored Elko to put the Cougars up 1-0.

That would be the only time College Station would score off of Sparks, who went on to pitch an absolute gem.

In the top of the second inning, Cade Warmke led off with a double, and Gunner Gee reached on an error after Elko booted a ball at shortstop. Devin Murithi followed with a two-run opposite field double to put the Cubs up 2-1.

Then in the third inning, Jacob Mabie led off with a single, Sparks was hit by a pitch, and Ethan Jezierski walked to load the bases. Warmke and Gee then drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to increase the score to 4-1. That was followed by an RBI single by Hayden Hupe to make it 5-1 Brenham.

Sparks went on to pitch 6 1/3 innings and throwing over 100 pitches. Mason Lampe then came on and got the final two outs to end the game. College Station loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Blake Binderup, who had already homered twice in the series was at the plate. Lampe got him to fly out to Hupe in left field for the final out, and the celebration was on.

The Cubs now advance to face Friendswood in the Region Semi-Finals. Playoff information to be determined.
