WASHINGTON CO. FIRE OFFICIALS ENCOURAGE SAFE USE OF FIREWORKS FOR FOURTH OF JULY

While fireworks will not be banned in Washington County for the Fourth of July, local residents are urged to take great care when using them because of the extremely dry conditions of late.

During Tuesday’s Community Corner on KWHI, Brenham Fire Chief Roger Williams and Washington County Firefighters Association Vice President Ronnie Perry discussed some of the rules on fireworks in the city and county, and what precautions people should take if they plan on setting off fireworks.

Perry said the state sets criteria on when restrictions on fireworks can be implemented, but they have to be met by June 15th.  He said the county did not meet the requirements for those limitations by that date, so there is no restriction on the sale or use of fireworks in unincorporated areas of the county.

Williams said rain is still possible leading up to the 4th, but it may not be enough to have a huge effect on the current dryness.

Brenham city ordinance prohibits the possession, discharging, transportation, storing, sale or presence of any fireworks within the city or its territorial jurisdiction, which extends outside city limits for 5,000 feet.

For anyone choosing to use their own fireworks, having a water source readily available is a must.  Williams also said keeping a close eye on children and limiting the area where fireworks are used are very important.
