SENATE DISTRICT 18 CANDIDATE PROFILE: LOIS KOLKHORST

State Senator Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham) speaks at a Legislative Wrap-Up Forum December 7, 2021 at Blinn College in Brenham.

With early voting for the November midterms underway, KWHI is taking a look at what races Washington County residents are voting on.

We begin with Texas Senate District 18, and our spotlight today is on Republican incumbent Lois Kolkhorst of Brenham.  Kolkhorst, who owns Kolkhorst Foods with her husband, Jim, has served in the Senate since 2014 and previously served seven terms in House District 13.  She is running against Democrat Josh Tutt.

Kolkhorst says there are a lot of hot-button topics to address, one of those being border security.

Other matters Kolkhorst is focusing on are property tax relief, election integrity, using the state’s oil and gas reserves as drivers to improve the electric grid, investing in infrastructure and schools, reducing inflation, and mental health and the negative effects on it because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kolkhorst believes further restrictions on firearms are not necessary, and that the issue is more about making sure violent offenders are not released.

Kolkhorst says she does not take anyone’s vote for granted, and strives to be the voice for rural and suburban Texans.

Early voting runs through Friday, November 4th.  Election Day is Tuesday, November 8th.
