WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS ACCEPT BID FOR JAIL SECURITY FENCE

Washington County Commissioners accepted a bid for a security fence at the Washington County Jail at a brief meeting this (Tuesday) morning.

The court went with the bid of Shellback Construction of Brenham for 1,300 feet of 10-foot-tall perimeter chain link fence at the jail facility.  The fencing comes with barb and razor wire at the top and three gates with card readers.  The project costs $278,986 and will be paid with American Rescue Plan Act funds.

Jail Chief Deputy Eric Hensley said Shellback’s understanding of the jail’s layout and the county’s specific requests is why he recommended choosing them.

Hensley stated the bids were quite a bit higher than anticipated, but they were all “in the same ballpark.”  The other two bids were from Quality Works Construction, whose price was $232,600, and A-1 American Fence, whose cost was $336,600.

Commissioner Candice Bullock agreed that the bid pricing was “definitely a lot more than we expected,” but noted that this is “an interesting economic environment.”
