MUMFORD DEFEATS BURTON PANTHERS 10-5

Burton Little League Day (Mandy Kalkhake)

The Mumford Mustangs got the season sweep over the Burton Panthers with a 10-5 victory on Saturday. Burton was hosting Little League Day at Panther Field. Local youth were invited to wear their jerseys and stand out on the field with the team for the National Anthem.

Mumford scored three runs in the top of the first inning of starting pitcher Carson Lauter to take the early 3-0 lead.

Burton battled back in the bottom of the first. Chet Fritsch reached on an infield hit, and then Kaiden Kalkhake brought him home with an RBI triple. On a squeeze play, Colby Beck reach on a bunt hit, while Kalkhake scored to trim the Mumford lead to 3-2.

After both teams had quiet second innings, Mumford tacked on four more runs in the top of the third inning to increase their lead to 7-2.

In the bottom of the third inning, Austin Simank and Vicente Veliz started it off with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Kaiden Kalkhake slugged a three run homer to cut the Mumford lead down to 7-5.

The Mustangs added two more runs in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the sixth to finish with a 10-5 victory.

The Panthers have two more regular season games this week. They will host Iola on Tuesday. The start time has been moved up to 5pm for their home finale, which is also Seniors Night. The Seniors Night activities will be before the game.

Burton then travels to Iola for a Saturday afternoon game at 4:30pm. Both teams are battling each other for the second and third place seeds in District 26-2A.
