FORTNIGHTLY CLUB PRESENTS RECORD $42,500 IN BOOK SALE PROCEEDS TO CITY OF BRENHAM

Members of the Fortnightly Club of Brenham are
donating $42,500 to the City of Brenham's Nancy
Carol Roberts Memorial Library. The money was
raised through the club's annual used book sale at
the Washington County Expo.

The Fortnightly Club of Brenham broke records at its 2023 used book sale, and today (Thursday), it shared the fruits of its efforts with the City of Brenham.

At the club’s spring luncheon at Ant Street Inn, club leaders presented the city with a check for $42,500.  Proceeds from the annual book sale, which this year was held February 20-25, go toward the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library to promote literacy in the community.

Accepting the check was City Manager Carolyn Miller, who said the city cannot thank the Fortnightly Club enough for its continued support.

The club will be formally recognized by the city council during its next meeting on Thursday, May 18th

Another highlight of the luncheon was the announcement of the club’s Volunteer of the Year, Janie Mehrens.

Other business included the recognition of the club members, affectionately named the “bookhouse babes”, who take care of cleaning, sorting and pricing books for the book sale.  There were also 14 new members introduced, and time was taken to honor former members and supporters who have passed away.

City of Brenham Librarian Idalia Avezuela provided a brief update on activity at the library and the programs and services it offers.  Avezuela said visitor and book circulation numbers are growing, while new member accounts are steady over the past year.  She also talked about amenities at the library like the green screen studios, which are seeing high enough usage to warrant the future addition of new cameras and editing software.

The Fortnightly Club meets once a month and has a 24-hour donation drop-off at its bookhouse at 906 North Park Street in Brenham.
