CUBS CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT WITH 46-25 HOMECOMING WIN OVER RUDDER

The first mission of the season is now complete. The Brenham Cub Football Team is going to the playoffs after last (Friday) night's 46-25 homecoming win over the Rudder Rangers.

It was the Jakoby Dixon Show as the freshman runningback had a huge night. Dixon finished with 17 carries for 243 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught seven passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns. The 199 yards receiving in one game was third most in Cub history behind only JaQuay Cross and Brandon Collins.

Rudder took the opening drive down the field and QB Jaquise Martin scored on a 12-yard touchdown run. Rudder missed the extra point, but still led 6-0 with 9:08 left in the first quarter.

The Cubs got their first points on a field goal by Bleu Cienega to cut the Rudder lead to 6-3 at the 4:16 mark.

On the next drive, Rudder botched a flea-flicker that led to a fumble recovery by Brenham. The Cubs then pulled their own trick play. Jordan Harvey threw a swing pass to Chris Guidry, who then through a 34 yard touchdown pass to Dixon. Cienega added the extra point to make it 10-6 Cubs with 3:58 left in the first quarter.

Rudder then fumbled the kickoff and it was recovered by Brenham. Harvey then hit Dixon on another 34-yard touchdown pass and Cienega added the extra point to increase the lead to 17-6 with 3:06 to go in the first quarter.

The second quarter scoring started with Rudder's Christian Ocampo hitting a 33-yard field goal to cut the Brenham lead to 17-9 at the 10:27 mark.

The Cubs responded with Dixon getting his third touchdown of the first half with a 37-yard touchdown run. Cienega's extra point made it 24-9 with 8:01 left in the second quarter.

Ocampo added another field goal with 5:04 left in the half. The teams went into the locker room with Brenham holding a 24-12 lead.

The Cubs started the third quarter at their own seven yard line. Harvey tossed a swing pass to Dixon, and on the Whataburger What-a-Play of the Night, he took that pass and raced 93 yards to the end zone for his fourth touchdown of the game. Cienega added the extra point, and that put Brenham up 31-12 just 20 seconds into the second half.

Rudder responded by bringing in Cody Billings to quarterback, and he threw a touchdown pass to Breandon Cooks. Ocampo added the extra point to trim the Brenham lead to 31-19 with 8:11 left in the third quarter.

On the next drive, Rudder picked up a Cub fumble and ran it back the other way for a defensive touchdown. They put Martin back in at quarterback and went for the two point conversion, but he was stopped just short of the goal line. Brenham's lead was down to 31-25 with at the 5:14 mark.

In the fourth quarter, the Cubs would put it away with two more touchdowns. Dixon scored on a 56-yard touchdown run. Harvey then threw a pass to Ivan Salazar for the two point conversion to make it 39-25 with 10:45 to go in the game.

Dixon would find the end zone for a sixth and final time on a 38-yard run and Cienega added the extra point to make it 46-25 Brenham with 8:12 left in the fourth quarter. That would go on to be the final score.

Next up, the Cubs (5-3, 3-1) will go on the road to face the Huntsville Hornets (4-4, 3-1) at their new stadium on Friday at 7:30pm (7pm pregame on KWHI1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com).
