A longtime Washington County businessman has passed away. 

Edward Arthur Smith Jr., who is best known as the president of the Chappell Hill Bank, died on Tuesday, October 17, at the age of 84.

Smith was a 1957 graduate of Lutheran High School in Houston, and went to Texas A&M where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets.

He later moved back to Houston, where he married his wife Gwendolyn in 1966.  The couple was married for over 51 years until her death on January 9, 2018.

They had three children, two sons, Edward III, and Douglas, and one daughter, Charlotte.

Smith moved the family to Brenham in 1980, and later became president of the Chappell Hill Bank.

In addition to his work at the bank, Smith was involved in many civic organizations.  In 2019, he was named the Chappell Hill Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year.

In 2022, the Chappell Hill Bank was named the Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year, and received the Texas Treasure Business Award.  Smith accepted both honors on behalf of the bank.

Visitation for Edward Smith Jr. will be this Friday from 5-7pm at Brenham Memorial Chapel.

The funeral service will be Saturday morning at 11am also at Brenham Memorial Chapel. 

The burial will follow at the Masonic Cemetery in Chappell Hill.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Washington County EMS.
