BURTON TO CELEBRATE TEXAS RANGER DAY SATURDAY

Saturday will be a day full of food, fun and history in Burton, as the town celebrates the 13th Annual Texas Ranger Day.

Organized by the Burton Heritage Society, the event commemorates the founding of the Texas Rangers and honors the deeds of famous local Ranger Leander McNelly.

Steph Jarvis of the Burton Heritage Society, speaking during Tuesday’s Community Corner on KWHI, said the celebration helps to raise awareness and funding for the restoration of the historic Mt. Zion Chapel.

Activities in downtown Burton kick off with opening ceremonies at noon and run until 5 p.m.  Guests will be able to experience Texas Ranger camp life as it was in the 1880s, with folk life demonstrations, mule-driven buggy rides, a chuckwagon cooking display and historical reenactments by the Legends of the Texas Rangers and McNelly’s Rangers.

Tom Whitesides, better known at Texas Ranger Day as “Judge Hang ‘em High”, said attendees will also be able to swear out “warrants” to have their friends “arrested”, all further benefitting the Burton Heritage Society’s efforts.

Other festivities to look forward to include the Annie Maud Avis Memorial Chili and Beans Cook-off, music by Kountry Chick DJ, vendors, a silent auction, tours of the Burton Railroad Depot and Burton Cotton Gin, kid’s games and the Lil Mr. and Miss Ranger Contest at 1 p.m.

Meal tickets for the chili cook-off are $10 for adults, $5 for kids 6-10.  General admission is free.
