CITY OF BURTON HAS HIGHEST-EVER MONTH OF SALES TAX REBATES

The City of Burton broke a record this month for sales and tax distributions.

The Texas Comptroller’s Office reported that Burton received a rebate of $29,912 this month, over three times what the city received last March at $8,336, an increase of 258.79 percent.

So far this year, the city has received $54,298, up 84.48 percent from the $29,432 brought in through March 2023.  This year, the city has already collected over half of last year’s entire total of $103,942.

Burton City Secretary Angela Harrington told KWHI that she double-checked with the Comptroller’s Office to verify the rebate was correct, and she was informed the number was indeed valid.  She said the city is currently unsure why the rebate was so high, but as is, it is the highest month of sales tax that the city has ever had.

Burton Mayor Karen Buck said the city is awaiting approval for access to the information behind those numbers.

As for sales tax rebates around the county, March’s totals were much more in line with those seen historically.

Washington County received $318,884, a decrease of 5.19 percent from the $336,345 it took in last March.  The county’s receipts of $1,133,513 so far this year are down by 2.46 percent from the $1,162,184 taken in through the first quarter of 2023.

The City of Brenham’s March rebate was $716,326, up 2.62 percent from March a year ago, when it received $698,026.  So far this year, the city’s rebates come out to $2,510,564, compared to $2,306,643 received through this time last year, an increase of 8.84 percent.

According to Comptroller Glenn Hegar, the state paid out $980.9 million in local sales tax allocations this month, down 2.2 percent from last March, but still up 1 percent for the year to date.
