BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL APPROVES LAND SALE TO TxDOT FOR CLOVERLEAF PROJECT

The Brenham City Council on Thursday approved selling land to TxDOT as part of its project to replace the Highway 290 cloverleaf interchange.

The unanimous vote came after a brief executive session.  The sale is for 0.0143 acres, or roughly 623 square feet, located at the southwest corner of Highway 290 and Westwood Lane.

The council did not disclose the amount that the land was sold for.  City Attorney Cary Bovey said once the city signs the agreement with TxDOT, then it can be revealed.  The proceeds from the sale will go into the city’s general fund.

TxDOT held a public hearing in January to provide an update on the project, which will build a new interchange at the intersection of Highway 290 and Highway 36.  The estimated cost is $233 million, with construction expected to start in the summer of 2027.

Also on Thursday, the council received a presentation of the police department’s 2023 racial profiling report and discussed updates to the city’s charter.  The charter document must be reviewed every five years.  A special election will be called in May 2025 if the council chooses to make amendments to the charter.
