WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS EXTEND DISASTER DECLARATION

Washington County Commissioners held an emergency meeting this (Wednesday) morning to approve an extension of the county’s disaster declaration stemming from floods and storm damage over the past month.

The initial declaration was issued on May 17th and was effective for seven days, needing approval from the commissioners court before it could be extended.  It is now effective until June 20th, unless extended further or terminated before then.

Emergency Management Coordinator Bryan Ruemke said the declaration allows the county to be eligible for federal assistance, if it becomes available.

Upon the issuance of the original declaration last week, County Judge John Durrenberger wrote to Governor Greg Abbott that the damage to county roads and bridges and the cost to remove tree debris could run over $164,000.  The letter said an effective response to the incident “is beyond Washington County’s capability to recover without supplementary state and/or federal assistance.”
