WASHINGTON CO. HISTORICAL COMMISSION TO HOST SIXTH ANNUAL YOUTH HISTORY CAMP
Thirty children will soon be able to experience Texas history up close through the Washington County Historical Commission’s sixth annual “Gone to Texas” Youth History Camp.
The five-day camp, running July 13-17, is sponsored by the Historical Commission in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County and the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site.
Children ages 9-11 will visit the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site, the Fanthorp Inn at Anderson, Barrington Farm, the archeological excavations at the old townsite of Washington, and Independence Hall at Washington-on-the-Brazos. The professional interpretive staff members at the sites will provide the educational content.
Tom Stevens, past chair of the Washington County Historical Commission, said the goal is to ensure that local youth learn and appreciate the state’s rich history. Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Shawn Koonce said the program acts as an opportunity to bring Texas history to life for kids in a fun and unique way.
Sponsors, county officials, and other supporters of the camp will join the campers for lunch on the final day of the camp at Washington-on-the-Brazos.
Supporting partners for the Gone to Texas camp are Brenham National Bank, Blue Bell Creameries, Brand it Graphix, Cadence Bank, Chappell Hill Bank, Chick-fil-A Brenham, Citizens State Bank, VeraBank, Travis and Linda Cook, HEB College Station, Kathy and Clay Parker, Sonic Drive-In in Brenham, and the Washington-on-the-Brazos Historical Foundation.
