DECEASED SUSPECT IN NAVASOTA BURGLARY CASE IDENTIFIED

Authorities in Navasota have identified the suspect who died in custody last week after an alleged burglary attempt and a physical altercation with local residents.

The suspect was identified as 33-year-old Edrick Peterson of Navasota.

Peterson is accused by Navasota police of breaking into an apartment in the 700 block of Doris Street and assaulting one of the residents early in the morning on May 28th.  Police say other residents inside forcefully removed Peterson, and a physical altercation ensued.

When officers arrived, Peterson was not on scene, but he was found by a family member in a grassy field two blocks away from the apartment complex.  He was reported to be mumbling and unable to stand on his own.

Police detained Peterson after they say he resisted, but paramedics had to be called when he lost consciousness.  After administering CPR, they transported him to Grimes St. Joseph Hospital in Navasota, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Navasota Police Criminal Investigation Division and the Texas Rangers are leading investigation on the case.

Navasota Police Chief Mike Mize said while an autopsy has been performed, there is currently not a timeframe on when the results will be released, as the coroner’s office is waiting on a toxicology report before releasing the findings from the autopsy.

Anyone who has information that could assist in the investigation is asked to contact the Navasota Police Department at 936-825-6125 or Grimes County Crime Stoppers at 936-873-2000.
