SALES TAX REBATES DOWN FOR WASHINGTON CO. & BRENHAM, UP SIGNIFICANTLY FOR BURTON

  

Washington County and the City of Brenham saw a decline in sales and tax distributions for the month of August, while a strong month for the City of Burton has propelled it past what it collected in all of 2023.

The county’s rebate this month was $378,390, down 14.1 percent from when it brought in $440,537 in August 2023.  So far this year, the county has received $3,082,029, a 4.27 percent decrease from the $3,219,626 taken in through this time last year.

The City of Brenham collected $828,115 in August, a drop of 11.42 percent from its $934,973 rebate last August.  The city has received $6,679,215 through this August, which is up 4.65 percent from 2023’s year-to-date payment of $6,381,981.

The City of Burton’s rebate for August more than tripled from the same time last year, tallying $14,953 in comparison to $4,413, an increase of 238.84 percent.  The city’s receipts for the year add up to $113,889, up 62.25 percent from the $70,191 received through this time a year ago and now above the $103,942 collected in total last year.

According to Comptroller Glenn Hegar, the state paid out $1.2 billion in local sales tax allocations for August, down 0.3 percent from August of last year ago but still up 1.8 percent to date for 2024.
