The “No Kings Day” event is scheduled tomorrow (Saturday) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Highway 290 East and Highway 36 South, outside the Brenham Taco Bell. The local protest is one of over 2,000 planned around the United States, with online information describing it as “a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies.”
The events are planned the same day as President Trump, who turns 79 tomorrow, will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Army with a parade.
The topic of the protest was brought up during Thursday’s Brenham City Council meeting. Mark Becerra, referencing protests in other cities and states that have turned violent over immigration policies, said Texans respect the law and those who enforce it.
Washington County Democratic Party Chair James Corbett said this event is not connected to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protests, stating it is a response to what participants feel is an overstepping of boundaries by the president.
In preparation for the protests around Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has announced the deployment of Texas National Guard troops to “ensure peace and order.”
The local demonstration is being put on by the Democratic Women of Brenham, and will be held rain or shine. Sam Madison, one of the primary organizers, said this is not the group’s first event, as it has held several protests in recent months and has been planning this one for some time. She said participants have remained peaceful and respectful for each event thus far, and that the same will be expected of anyone who attends tomorrow, with no tolerance for violence. She said the gathering is a “true showing of camaraderie” among citizens expressing their rights “the right way.”
A group of counter-protestors is expected to be present across the street from the No Kings group. Interim Brenham Police Chief David Gott said the police department will have a presence and will be ready in case something happens, but he does not believe there will be any problems.
