BLINN FOOTBALL OVERWHELMS TWA FOR SEASON-OPENING HOME VICTORY

The Buccaneers will have a bye in week two before taking on Community Christian on Sept. 13

The Blinn College football team opened the season with a 69-0 non-conference blowout of Transformation With Athletics College on Saturday at Cub Stadium in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers (1-0) worked through swirling winds and some early game jitters before pouring on the offense early and often.

“I liked the way we executed tonight,” Blinn head coach Ryan Mahon said. “I think we needed to get our nerves out of the way early, and when we did that we got rolling. A lot of kids did a lot of good things, and while there are some errors to correct, this was the time to navigate those errors and see how we can improve before game two.”

Jack Emerson

Freshman quarterback Jack Emerson led the Bucs on two first-quarter scoring drives, starting with a 21-yard pass to freshman wide receiver Savion Conteh. Conteh made a juggling catch near the corner of the end zone with just under eight minutes left in the quarter and sophomore kicker Matt Velaso drilled the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

After TWA’s subsequent possession ended with a turnover on downs, the Bucs marched 85 yards for a score. Emerson capped the drive with a 38-yard strike over the middle to freshman wideout Travaris Turner-Smith for a 14-0 cushion with about two minutes left in the quarter.

The Buccaneer defense got in on the scoring during TWA’s next offensive series when the Battlecats fumbled the ball on an errant toss in the final second of the opening quarter. Freshman defensive back Trent Lancaster scooped up the loose ball and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown and a 20-0 lead. Velasco’s PAT was no good.

In the second quarter, freshman running back Semaj Gatson pushed Blinn’s lead to 27-0 on a 2-yard TD scamper.

“As an offense, there’s a lot we can improve on, but I think we did a lot of good things tonight,” Emerson said. “We showed our capabilities and our explosiveness, and we were able to work the ball up and down the field. I’m really excited about our offensive weapons and what we’ll be able to continue to do moving forward.”

Freshman quarterback Nathen Lewis took over later in the second quarter and led another Blinn scoring drive. Lewis made it 34-0 when he hit sophomore receiver Tracy James Jr. on a 1-yard pass midway through the second.

Just before halftime, freshman running back Terri Lawrence took a handoff and raced into the end zone from 17 yards out to push the home team’s lead to 41-0.

Midway through the third quarter, freshman running back Jordan Hayes produced a highlight reel play when he broke four tackles on his way to a 40-yard touchdown run for a 48-0 lead.

Freshman running back Landon Bridges got in on the fun when he crossed the goal line from on a short run late in the third quarter.

Gatson scored his second rushing TD of the night in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard run that made it 62-0.

The Bucs capped their offensive showcase in the final minute of play when freshman QB Trevor Long lofted a 24-yard TD pass to freshman receiver Kyrell Sheffield.

Blinn will have a bye in week two before concluding non-conference play against Community Christian College at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Cub Stadium.
