MAIFEST FEATURED IN ‘TEXAS FESTIVALS’ EXHIBIT AT BULLOCK STATE HISTORY MUSEUM
Brenham’s beloved Maifest is on display in the newest temporary exhibit at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin.
The “Texas Festivals” exhibit, now on display through September 27th, celebrates the rich cultural heritage and diverse traditions of festivals across the Lone Star State. As visitors enter the gallery, Maifest is placed in a central location, underscoring the festival’s deep roots and enduring significance as a cherished cultural tradition in Texas history.
Several artifacts from the Brenham Heritage Museum are currently on loan to the Bullock Museum for the duration of the exhibit. Prominently featured is 1977 Senior Maifest King regalia worn by Kevin Ray Lehmann in the Senior Court of Romance, displayed alongside historic programs and photographs.
Brenham Heritage Museum Executive Director Ciera Harris said when speaking with the staff at the Bullock Museum, she was informed that Maifest is “front and center” upon first walking into the exhibit because it is the oldest festival on display. She said it is quite appropriate to showcase a king’s regalia, adding that, “Maifest really is the ‘king’ of Texas Festivals.”
Brenham Heritage Museum Board Vice Chair Brad Tegeler said, “Maifest is about community spirit, tradition, and pride in our home county”, adding, “To have the opportunity to share a part of Washington County’s rich heritage through this exhibit is truly an honor.”
The Brenham Heritage Museum extends its appreciation to Mike Juen, Exhibition Project Manager and Senior Registrar of the Exhibits Department at the Bullock Texas State History Museum, for his support in bringing the exhibit to life.
