BURTON BEATS SCHULENBURG IN DOUBLE OVERTIME THRILLER
The Burton Panthers pulled off a wild 68-66 double overtime victory over the Schulenburg Shorthorns last (Friday) night at Panther Stadium.
Schulenburg scored first to take the early 6-0 lead. Kayden Patterson found Braydon Martin on a touchdown pass to tie it at 6-6. Burton missed the extra point.
The Shorthorns scored again to take a 12-6 lead. However, Patterson would score on a touchdown run, and Rueben Rodriguez kicked the extra point to give Burton a 13-12 lead at the end of the first.
Schulenburg got the second quarter scoring started with a touchdown and a two-point conversion to take a 20-13 lead.
Burton tied the game 20-20 on a one-yard run by Patterson and a PAT by Rodriguez.
The Shorthorns re-took the lead on a touchdown, but missed the extra point.
Maleek Bibby scored on a 32-yard touchdown run to put the Panthers back in front and Rodriguez kicked the extra point to put Burton in front 27-26 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Bibby ran for a 54-yard touchdown and another PAT by Rodriguez gave the Panthers a 34-26 lead.
Schulenburg responded with a pair of touchdowns to jump back out in front 40-34.
Braydon Martin started the fourth quarter with a two-yard touchdown to tie the score at 40-40. Burton missed the extra point, which would have given them the lead.
The Shorthorns scored to make it 48-40. The Panthers came back with a touchdown on a 39-yard run by Patterson and a two-point conversion to tie it 48-48.
After Schulenburg scored yet again to take a 54-48 lead, but Burton tied it before the end of regulation on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Patterson to Bibby to make it 54-54.
In the first overtime, the Shorthorns scored first to take a 60-54 lead. Patterson tied it back up on a one -yard run, but Burton missed the two-point conversion, 60-60.
In the second overtime, the Panthers got the ball first. Patterson threw a touchdown pass to Yobani Brewer and then Burton was successful on the two-point conversion to take a 68-60 lead.
Schulenburg had one last chance and got the touchdown to tie it, but Burton stopped them on a the two-point try to preserve the double overtime win, 68-66.
Next up, the Panthers (3-0) are off this coming week for the Washington County Fair.
