Entering the final round of play Tuesday, the Blinn College women’s golf team looked at its 18-stroke deficit and said, “No problem.”

The Buccaneers staged an incredible rally across the round of play at the Battle of Winter Creek and surged into first place to capture its third team victory of the fall.

Blinn finished 53-over par, outlasting Texas Wesleyan University by one stroke.

Of the 54 golfers on the course, Blinn sophomore Daniah Syed led the way at 8-over par for a third-place finish. Freshmen Jacqueline Lawrence and Ava Murcer tied for fifth at 12-over, and sophomore Abiha Syed was 12th at 21-over.

The two-day tournament – hosted by the University of Arts and Science of Oklahoma at the Winter Creek Golf Club in Blanchard, Okla. – featured 10 teams, two of which were ahead of Blinn in the standings entering Tuesday’s final round.

Texas Wesleyan owned a seven-shot lead over Oklahoma City University and an 18-stroke cushion over the Bucs before Blinn battled back.

Blinn was paired with Texas Wesleyan and Oklahoma City in the final round and proved up to the challenge.

The Bucs were 4-over par after the first nine holes of the round, making up 11 strokes in the process, and pulled ahead of Texas Wesleyan by round’s end.

"I don't normally follow the scores closely during a round," said Blinn assistant coach Gary Belt, who leads the Buccaneer women during tournaments, “but I could tell something was happening.”

Blinn posted one eagle, 10 birdies, and 43 pars to close the gap.

"It was remarkable," Belt added. "The ladies got into a groove and willed their way to the win."

Blinn’s fall season concludes with the two-day Blinn College Fall Invitation beginning Monday, Oct. 20, at the Brenham Country Club in Brenham, Texas. The Buccaneer men’s golf team will also compete in the tournament.
