TWO MEN SENTENCED IN DRIVE-BY SHOOTING OF A NAVASOTA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT
Two men involved in the drive-by shooting of a Navasota High School student were sentenced in Grimes County District Court.
22-year-old Alfredo Garza and 23-year-old Eric Segovia plead guilty to the murder of 18-year-old Anthony Williams that occurred on October 14, 2021.
The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of shots fired at the intersection of Leon Street and Sycamore Street in Bedias.
Williams, who was struck by a bullet, was taken to the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Madisonville where later died.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, investigators developed leads that Garza and Segovia were responsible for the drive-by shooting. It is believed to have been retaliation against two family members of Williams.
Based on their investigation, the D.A.’s Office said that Williams was not the intended target.
While in custody for the shooting, Garza admitted to the murder during a jail fight. The information was verified during a follow-up investigation.
Segovia later confirmed their involvement in the murder of Williams. He entered a plea agreement before 12th District Court Judge David Moorman, and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Segovia also agreed to testify truthfully against Garza at his trial.
Garza accepted a plea agreement for 35 years in prison before 506th District Court Judge Gary Cheney. Garza’s jury trial was supposed to begin next month.
The Williams family attended the sentence hearings, and were given the opportunity to address both men.
