BLACK HISTORY MONTH FORUM BEGINS MONDAY AT CANNERY KITCHEN
Washington County residents are invited to observe Black History Month at the James Emerson Dennis Jr. Black History Month Forum.
Programs will take place each Monday during the month of February at the Cannery Kitchen in Brenham, starting at 6 p.m. The programs will explore various themes, from politics and local history to the arts.
The first program on February 2nd will be “Voices at the Table”, a community political forum. Several candidates in the March Republican primary election are slated to attend, including Douglas Cone, Kirk Hanath and Brad Tegeler for county judge; Travis Semora and Holly Johnson for Precinct 2 justice of the peace; and Jim Chisolm for Precinct 2 commissioner.
Next on February 9th will be “Roots and Resistance”, a presentation on Brenham community legacies. The featured speaker will be Dr. Tina Henderson, President of Texas Ten Historical Explorers and the Prairie View A&M University Community and Economic Development Extension Agent for Washington County.
Following that on February 16th will be “Black Brilliance”, a discussion on innovators who changed the world and left a legacy. Leading the conversation will be Dr. Malachi Crawford, who serves at Prairie View A&M as the Interim Associate Dean for Faculty, Academic and Student Affairs and as an associate professor and program coordinator.
The series of programs will conclude on February 23rd with “Soul, Canvas and Stage”, focused on the legacy of Black expression and featuring several artists.
Members of the Brenham High School Black History Club will also be in attendance during the forum.
The programs are free and open to the public.
