WASHINGTON COUNTY MINOR BOYS RUN-RULE HEMPSTEAD 16-0 TO WIN DISTRICT 13 TITLE
The Washington County Minor (9-10) Boys Baseball Team only needed one win over Hempstead to clinch the District 13 Championship. By the time the dust settled, there was no doubt, who the better team was as Washington County rolled to a 16-0 win that went only five innings due to the mercy rule.
Holden Hejl threw a no-hitter and struck out 12 batters (including the first nine in a row) along the way. He allowed just one walk in the game, which was erased on a double play.
Washington County got the offense going in the first inning. The leadoff hitter, Preston Hodde, was hit by a pitch and later stole second base. Hejl brought him home with an RBI double to make it 1-0. Graham Wilke singled home Hejl to increase the lead to 2-0. Cam Seely and Tanner Schroeder drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Grady Curtis followed with an RBI single to score Wilke with the third run. The next batter up, Django Moffett, rounded out the first inning scoring by slugging a two-run double to plate Seely and Schroeder, which gave Washington County a 5-0 advantage.
The score remained that way until Washington pushed across two more runs in the top of the third. Case Knesek singled, and Hejl followed with his second double of the game. Wilke and Seely brought Knesek and Hejl home with back-to-back RBI groundouts, which made it 7-0.
Washington County put the game away with nine runs in the top of the fifth inning. The big hits in that inning were a three-run triple by Hejl, and a two-run double by Schroeder.
Washington County now moves on to the Section 1 Tournament, which starts in Brenham on Monday night at 7pm. They will face Austin Northwest in the opening game on Dallmeyer Field.
