WALLER CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE RECEIVES STEP TRAFFIC SAFETY GRANTS

The Waller County Sheriff’s Office has received over $50,000 in state funds to improve traffic safety.

TxDOT recently granted $53,000 to the Sheriff’s Office in the form of Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) safety grants.

Waller County Sheriff R. Glenn Smith says the program allows field operations personnel to enforce traffic safety laws and directly reduce crashes, fatalities, and injuries. One of the grant awards will be used to improve Commercial Motor Vehicle safety, while the other is a comprehensive grant designed to reduce DWIs, distracted driving, speeding, seat belt and intersection violations.

STEP grants are awarded to public safety agencies to reimburse them for overtime activities in selected enforcement areas where high numbers of traffic incidents, crashes, and fatalities are reported. The TxDOT programs are statewide projects implemented to educate local communities, but also to reduce fatality crashes.

The Sheriff’s Office said in a release that, according to the TxDOT Crash Reporting Information System, there were 36 motor vehicle fatalities in Waller County during the most recent three-year reporting period.

Smith said the Sheriff’s Office is “part of the county’s effort to keep our citizens safe and educate the driving public on roadway safety”.
