FEDERAL JUDGE ORDERS SUSPENSION OF TEXAS ABORTION LAW

A federal judge on Wednesday temporarily blocked Texas from enforcing its new abortion law, following a lawsuit against the state by the Biden Administration.

In a 113-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman said from the time Senate Bill 8 became effective, “women have been unlawfully prevented from exercising control over their lives in ways that are protected by the Constitution.”  He said his court “will not sanction one more day of this offensive deprivation of such an important right.”

The new law prevents abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is typically around the sixth week of pregnancy.  The law does not make exceptions in cases of rape or incest.

Texas intends to seek a reversal of Pitman’s ruling from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
