A local pastor is celebrating a milestone of ministry.

Reverend Dr. Johnnie Williams, pastor of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in the Quarry community, marks 60 years as a pastor this year. Washington County Commissioners presented him with a proclamation at their meeting this (Monday) morning, congratulating and thanking him for his years of service.

Dr. Williams started as a pastor at the age of 20. Getting ready for his 81^st birthday on August 13^th, he said is appreciative of the recognition and is glad to be able to serve.

A copy of the proclamation read at Monday's Washington County Commissioners meeting in recognition of Rev. Dr. Johnnie Williams' 60 years of ministry.

Dr. Williams’ work in and around the Brenham area has earned him the nicknames of “the community’s pastor” and “the city’s pastor”. He has served as the pastor of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Dr. Williams is also the worship service leader at six area nursing homes and the chaplain of the Brenham Police Department, Washington County Jail and Bread Partners of Washington County. In addition, he is the Dean of the Mount Olive District Association and the Mount Carmel School of Religious, and has been involved with many volunteer and ministerial efforts.

Commissioner Joy Fuchs called Dr. Williams “a friend and a servant to our community,” while Commissioner Candice Bullock said it is clear he is “a wonderful servant of God.” Commissioner Kirk Hanath said it has been an honor to know him and that he is a “very good and humble servant,” adding that he still has every bit of energy from his youth.

A celebration for Dr. Williams will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Blinn College Student Center banquet room. Due to the number of guests expected, organizers ask those who attend to wear a mask.

Also at today’s meeting, commissioners:

Tabled action on a bid for a new generator at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. The court said tabling was necessary until the bidder’s federal System for Award Management (SAM) numbers can be reinstated.
Approved submitting COVID-19 hazard mitigation grant applications for generators for the Washington County Expo office building and event center, as well as the EMS station in Burton. Emergency Management Coordinator Bryan Ruemke said if the county is approved for the grants, the county’s 10 percent contribution would be $32,000 for the generator at the Expo and $4,700 for the generator at the EMS station.
Approved a revised lease between the Washington County Fair Association and the Washington County Expo for the use of Expo facilities during the county fair. The amendments to the lease, which was originally approved on May 17^th, primarily consist of minor adjustments to language in the lease.
Reappointed County Judge John Durrenberger to the Brazos Valley Board of Directors for a three-year term beginning October 1, 2022 and ending September 30, 2025.
Approved a final plat for the Bluebonnet Ridge subdivision, a residential development consisting of 36 lots and four roads on Chadwick Hogan Road in Precinct 2.
Discussed formal notices from PGMS for a two-inch road bore for a one-inch water line on Old Gay Hill Road and Mt. Vernon Road in Precinct 3. No action was taken.
Discussed a formal notice from GeoSouthern Chalk II, LLC for a temporary lay flat water line 12 inches or smaller on Harmon School Road and Oevermann Road in Precinct 4. No action was taken.
