WASHINGTON COUNTY 4-HERS EXCEL AT THE TEXAS 4-H ROUNDUP

Senior 4-H members from Washington County 4-H participated at the 77th Texas 4-H Roundup in College Station, Texas.  Texas 4-H Roundup, the pinnacle event for all of Texas 4-H, welcomed around 1,300 youth to compete in approximately 50 diverse competitions throughout the week.  The theme of the Roundup was “DEFINE”.

The Washington County 4-H program is proud of the youth and teams for their participation and success at Texas 4-H Roundup.  Walking the stage at evening assemblies as a Top 3 contender in any Texas 4-H Roundup contest is a huge goal and great accomplishment!

Madison Moran participated in her 3rd Texas 4-H Food Show and placed 5th in the Appetizer category with her Build-a-Bite Charcuterie after a day full of contest components.  Moran took a nutrition knowledge test, was judged in kitchen preparation of her dish, was interviewed about her dish and food project work and then did a kitchen skill test in front of judges. There were 40 youth from across the state competing in contest. 

Competing on Wednesday in the State 4-H Food Challenge Competition which is “Chopped” style contest with food preparation and then a presentation and interview were Madison Moran, Haylie Niemeyer, Audrey Schmidt and Magali Silva.  There were 44 teams competing in this state competition.  This team competed in the Appetizer category and was coached by Mrs. Hannah Krebs.

Competing in the Horse Quiz Bowl were 4-Hers Lillian Faske, Jonathan Faske, Avila Colanter and Bethany Faske.  Colanter was 5th place Individual in the Quiz Bowl Contest.  This team earned 7th place team in this competition.  This same team competed in the Hippology contest, placing 7th as a team.  Avila Colanter was 8th High Point Individual in Hippology.  Competing in the State Horse Judging Contest were Avila Colanter, Lillian Faske, Jonah Faske and Jonathan Faske.  These teams are coached by Suzanne Faske, Miriam Faske, Rachel Faske and Cheyenne Jacobson.

The 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl team placed 6th overall in state competition.  This team consisted of Kaylin Jacobs, Corbin Janner, Matthew Philips and Calvin Wunderlich.  Wunderlich earned 3rd place High Point Individual and was honored at the evening assembly on stage for this accomplishment.  The Quiz Bowl program is coached by Dr. Kris Wunderlich.


Audrey Schmidt participated in the state Photography Judging Contest and received 3rd place High Point Individual for her judging performance and was announced on stage at the Roundup assembly for her achievement.  Schmidt was also 1st place in Placing and 10th place in Reasons in the contest.  The Photography program is led by Mrs. Victoria Schmidt.

Competing in the state Wool Judging Contest were local 4-Hers Michael Kettler, Leyland Schroeder and Calvin Wunderlich coached by Mr. Joseph Dickschat.

On Thursday, Washington County 4-Hers competed in Educational Presentation contests.  Dalton Winkelmann received 6th place in the Promote 4-H division.  Matthew Philips competed in the Animal Science educational presentation contest.  Madison Moran did an educational presentation in the Ag Technology and Farm Safety category receiving 2nd place and was honored on stage at the final awards assembly for Texas 4-H Roundup on Thursday evening.

Competing in the Photography Contest at the state level with their district winning qualifying photos were Matthew Philips (3 blue ribbons, 1 red ribbon, 1 white ribbon), Audrey Schmidt (3 blue ribbons, 4 red ribbons) and Gabriella Smith (1 blue ribbon, 1 red ribbon).

Participating in the State 4-H Fashion Story Board competition was Addison Schramme and Gabby Smith.

One of the highlights of the week included Dawson Rudloff and Emmy Kate Boyd being recognized at the 4-H Opportunity Scholarship banquets for their outstanding 4-H careers.  Rudloff received a Ft. Worth Stock Show Syndicate Scholarship and Emmy Kate Boyd received the Amigos Para Ninos Houston Scholarship.

Being honored at a luncheon awards program at Texas 4-H Roundup was Washington County Adult Leader and Volunteer Christy Moran who was selected to receive the Salute to Excellence Award for District 11.  Moran was one of 24 individuals in the state being honored for devotion to leadership and excellence in supporting 4-Hers and the 4-H program in Washington County as a club leader, volunteer, county parent association officer and mentor to 4-H youth and their families in various project areas.

And, finally, Washington County 4-H Chairman, District 11 4-H Chairman and Texas 4-H Council Member Madison Moran spent the week in College Station actively serving on the council as one of 28 youth leaders to conduct the events of the Texas 4-H Roundup.  Moran served at the emcee for the Opening Assembly and At Large Delegate Election Campaign speeches and interviews.  State Council Members were introduced at each evening assembly and had daily responsibilities with contests, trade shows, workshops and leadership activities.  On the final evening of Roundup, the 2022-2023 Texas 4-H Council was introduced for the final time and Moran shared her farewell and hung up her coveted green jacket for the final time.  “Representing Washington County 4-H at the District and State level was a goal accomplished and dream come true and allowed me to serve fellow 4-Hers in this capacity while sharing the good news about leadership, citizenship, community service and personal development that the 4-H program strives for”, states Moran, 17 year old 4-H member.

Texas 4-H Roundup has been held on the campus of Texas A&M University since 1946, therefore making this event the 77th year of Texas 4-H Roundup.
