BRENHAM ISD RELEASES STATEMENT & MORE INFO REGARDING FRIDAY’S ALTERCATION
Brenham ISD issued a statement this (Monday) afternoon regarding the fight that broke out at the Brenham Cub-Bryan Rudder basketball game this past Friday night.
With 4:04 left to go in the game, and Brenham leading 66-46, the statement said that the melee started when one of the Rudder players committed a flagrant technical foul, leading to an altercation that resulted in the clearing of benches and individuals from the stands.
Law enforcement, as standard procedure, was at the event.
One of the Cub Basketball players was injured during the incident and taken to the hospital for further medical treatment.
Acting Brenham ISD Superintendent Clay Gillentine said that they understand the gravity of the incident, and are committed to taking all necessary actions to address it appropriately.
He added that the safety and well-being of the players, coaches, staff, and community are the school district's top priorities.
As a result of the brawl, the game was suspended, and Brenham ISD has submitted a detailed report to the University Interscholastic League.
The UIL is actively investigating the case, and Brenham ISD said they are fully cooperating with the inquiry.
BISD also revealed that the UIL had previously sent out a statement on December 4 to all the schools in the state expressing concern about incidents involving players and spectators engaging in altercations on the court.
The UIL said that should the number of these types of incidents continue to increase, that they may need to consider additional sanctions for stakeholders involved in these altercations.
Meanwhile, an “After Incident” meeting is going to take place on Wednesday morning with representatives from Brenham ISD Administration, Brenham High School Administration, the BISD safety and security team, and the Brenham Police Department all convening to discuss immediate steps and strategies moving forward.
In light of the incident, BISD announced that there will be an increased police presence and additional administrative support at all home basketball games, effective immediately.
The Brenham Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is looking into the case further as well.
Lieutenant Curtiss Schoen told KWHI that it is still being determined if any criminal charges will be filed.
Why waste the tax payer dollars on delinquency? Spend it on something of true merit such as better pay for math, science, civics and English teachers. Cut the funding for basketball and football and demolish the stadium. Spending money on security? That’s a double shot in the foot, so wasteful.
I have children in public school and the use of my tax dollars in public schools for funding delinquency does not represent me. We need school choice vouchers badly.
Sanity. So nice to see.
It’s not just a game to these parents. They are living vicariously. We show our true, collective values when we spend such a huge portion of the budget on extracurriculars while the educational institutions physically and otherwise are failing.
Zoom out and look at the big picture. An extreme shift in how we operate is required. In business that usually means ousting all existing management. Can’t see this being any different.
People LOVE complaining, but when the only realistic solution to give them what they want is for them to sacrifice something else you find you’re dealing with children. The people in positions of authority will keep giving lip service claiming they’re in a situation that’s not solvable until the people can act like adults, accept change, and compromise so things can trend for the better.
Why not demolish Firemens Park for baseball and Alumni Field for softball. If you get rid of one get rid of them all
.
Yes, the incident is being further investigated to determine the best way to effectively do “damage control” and kill any effort to hold anyone accountable so that “we” can quickly move beyond this moment in order to kill any further hit to the reputations of both teams’ athletic programs. Did you get all of that? (The gym was filled with witnesses who saw 1st hand what happened.) Some, I hear, from the community were in another city at the time of this incident and received phone calls, texts and VIDEOS of said event 10 minutes after it happened! Now, what is the best way to investigate and convince witnesses that “they did not see what their eyes purported to have seen”. Ridiculous!
As someone whose child graduated from BHS several years ago, and was not at this game, I can honestly say this comment puzzles me. Frankly, it sounds like a few kids got somewhat “hot-headed” and behaved in ways that neither the schools nor the coaches would be proud of. Why would anyone want to convince witnesses that “they did not see what their eyes purported to have seen”? In my humble opinion, each school should discipline any players who violate their student code of conduct based on the student handbook. If a law was broken, allow the proper authorities to investigate and arrest anyone who they believe has broken the law. Why does there have to be a conspiracy? Back in my day, each school would have dealt with their players (as would their parents), and no police would be needed and this type of thing would not happen again.
Back in your day things were different. People aren’t shaking hands after fights anymore…, they are pulling guns. These things escalate to far worse things. Have you already forgotten a high school student was shot and killed just recently here in Brenham??
Shannon is spot on! “Back in your day” we did not have metal detectors at the entrance of most public places including schools and schools did not have SRO (police officers) on campus. “Back in your day” students did not bring guns to school nor assault teachers. I am puzzled by the comment of “Let’s Do Better”. Being “woke” is helpful to see what really is happening in this present day of ours. The UIL does not have the testicular fortitude to sanction the schools involved! Each respective school district along with the coaches will not reprimand any of the players involved. The fight was a BENCH CLEARING BRAWL that led to a UIL sanctioned district game to be suspended! Maybe the police should be reprimanded for over-reacting??? There are plenty videos circulating around town. Perhaps “Let’s Do Better” should view one of them.
Actually, we did bring guns to school Most of us in the country that hunted a lot always had a rifle or shotgun hanging in the gunrack in our back windows of our trucksand we never locked the doors but they stayed right there, try that now i’d bet some karen would call you into police for driving through town with a gun plus as soon as you went into a store some hoodlum would bust the window and steal it.
Just so I can be clear, yes when I grew up, things would have been handled differently, and while there were plenty of guns on campus (mostly deer rifles hanging in the back of truck windows,) no one would have ever thought to use them on another person. My point was this, there are plenty of witnesses, lots of videos, the police are involved, yet some people are trying to create a conspiracy regarding the way the school is handling this. It may have been a bench clearing brawl, but of this I am certain, neither school would have wanted their teams to behave this way and I am certain each school is dealing with this issue. The police are involved, let them do their job and investigate and press charges if there is evidence to support it. If UIL rules were broken, let them address it, but the last thing our schools or players need is a bunch of people trying to create more drama than already occurred by spreading these conspiracy theories, someone has got to be the “adult in the room”. To accuse the school of just doing “damage control” does not seem fair or just to our administrators and coaches.
I was at the game on December 15th at the Brenham High School gym. What I seen was a Rudder player who had gotten frustrated because the Cubs had started dominating the game, so he decided to take his frustrations out on a Brenham player by taking a cheap shot and taking him out, Tempers flared and everything escalated and got out of hand. Kids are not like the kids were 30, 40, and 50 years ago where school personal would handle it in house. ( Remember Brenham still has to go over to play Rudder at their gym January 23rd) People don’t forget. There should have been more police presence and more school administrators there also. And BISD if you are going to put in steps for safety and security for Athletic events make sure you put it in for all Venues because players and fans can get Violent and want to fight anywhere.
I have to agree with lets do better now a days students don’t have any respect for their teachers, coaches and fellow students and team members I remember when the sport teams would travel for an out of town game the whole team wore matching blazers and slacks they were a team every one equal and not like they are now with crazy hair styles and clothes by doing this they are saying hey look at me that is not being a team player getting in a fight is the same thing hey look at me kick them off the TEAM because they are not true TEAM players
