GLENN HEGAR CHOSEN AS LONE FINALIST FOR TEXAS A&M SYSTEM CHANCELLOR
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar has been named the sole finalist to become the next chancellor of the Texas A&M University System.
The Texas A&M Board of Regents unanimously voted today (Friday) to choose Hegar as the finalist to succeed Chancellor John Sharp, who plans to retire this summer after having served in the role since 2011.
Hegar, who grew up in Hockley and was first elected as comptroller in 2014, was previously a member of the Texas House’s 28th District from 2003 to 2007. After that, he represented the Texas Senate’s 18th district, a seat now held by Lois Kolkhorst, from 2007 to 2014. Hegar is a 1993 graduate of Texas A&M.
Board of Regents Chair Bill Mahomes said in a university press release that Hegar “grasps the unique breadth and depth of the System’s impact on every corner of Texas through its eight state agencies and 11 universities.”
Hegar was reportedly one of five candidates considered for the chancellor’s position. The Texas Tribune previously reported that Texas A&M Foundation President and Brenham native Tyson Voelkel, U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul, University of Alabama President Stuart Bell, and State Representative Trent Ashby were also in the running.
The Board of Regents must now wait 21 days before voting to make Hegar’s appointment final.
