The city issued 122 permits in the month for $22,809,485.  New residential development made up a majority of that total, as 101 residential permits were issued for $17,207,156.  Many of those permits were issued to homebuilders like DR Horton and Stylecraft Builders for existing subdivisions like Liberty Village and Vintage Farms.

City of Brenham Development Services Director Stephanie Doland believes this past month was the largest the city has seen for residential permits.  For comparison, the entirety of 2024 had 111 new home permits for $19,001,405.  So far this year, the city has permitted 174 new homes for $29,810,332.

One of the main reasons for the massive increase in permits was due to the city’s impact fee grandfathering clause.  Doland said the city’s impact fee ordinance went into effect on July 1, 2024 but carried a one-year grandfathering period for properties that had already been submitted and received approval for a subdivision plat.  She said the city continues to see high interest for new growth and projects, including additional subdivisions.

Another permit of note during June was for $2,500,000, issued to Velocity Church for new church construction at 130 Lounge Road.  In addition, Baker Katz took out two permits totaling $1,950,000 for the construction of commercial multi-tenant building shells and civil work at 700 and 934 Highway 290 East.  Brenham Plaza, LLC was issued a $690,000 permit for the construction of a gas station/convenience store at 1101 Highway 290 East.

The city’s 122 permits for $22,809,485 in June are a substantial jump from June 2024, which saw 32 permits for $5,450,586.

So far this year, the city has issued 300 permits for $58,366,169.  Through this time last year, 162 permits had been issued for $24,121,324.
