DANIEL GASKAMP RETIRING AFTER 50 YEARS IN WASHINGTON CO. LAW ENFORCEMENT
After half a century in law enforcement for Brenham and Washington County, Daniel Gaskamp is calling it a career.
Sergeant Gaskamp is retiring after a combined 50 years with the Brenham Police Department and Washington County Sheriff’s Office, beginning with Brenham police on October 6, 1975. He served there for 37 years and has been with the sheriff’s office for the past 13 years.
Gaskamp wore several hats during his time in service, including as a SWAT team leader where he participated in numerous raids with the Independence Narcotics Task Force. He says he is very proud that no one was ever injured during those operations.
While quite a lot has changed in law enforcement over the years, one thing that has remained steadfast for Gaskamp is his enjoyment of interacting with the public, his emphasis of treating everyone with respect, and his goal of doing whatever he can to keep the community safe.
Gaskamp was also a member of the first Brenham Honor Guard and implemented the Citizens on Patrol program. In addition, he was involved as a D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) instructor in local schools and with the Washington County Peace Officers Association.
Gaskamp’s work has earned him multiple awards and recognitions, including several officer and deputy of the year awards and being voted in the Brenham Banner-Press as readers' favorite police officer. He says he may be stepping away from law enforcement, but he will always cherish the memories and the relationships with those he served alongside.
A come-and-go retirement party for Gaskamp will take place on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Sons of Hermann Lodge, 304 East Germania Street in Brenham.
